UNISON – Working for safer schools

Our members face uncertainty as schools reopen to all pupils in England from 8 March.

We understand that you will be getting lots of requests for support at the moment and want to do everything we can to support you.

We have updated the model escalation process for branches supporting members with health and safety concerns and have a model letter for branches to use if employers are not taking necessary actions. Please liaise with your region where you need support.

Model s44/100 letter

Nationally we have also sent a copy of our risk assessment checklist to all local authorities, schools and multi-academy trusts, calling on them to implement these measures. Please check with employers that they have received this letter and are updating their risk assessments.

We will email members tomorrow to point them towards our advice page, which will include fully updated FAQs. The page will also include our risk assessment checklist for reopening and vulnerable employee guide with model letters, which members received by email last week.

We continue to meet regularly with Department for Education officials and ministers, challenging their approach and highlighting the areas of their guidance that we think need to be improved for schools to reopen safely.

Thank you as always for your work to protect and support our members.
