Senior hospital figures in Grimsby can unlock dispute and deliver fair back pay to maternity workers, says UNISON

Maternity support workers in Grimsby are to strike for a week over their employer’s failure to put forward an acceptable offer to compensate them for tasks they have carried out above their pay grade, says UNISON.

The staff, who were previously on band 2 of the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale, have carried out clinical duties for several years that should have been paid at the higher band 3, says UNISON.

Although the staff have now been moved up to the higher salary grade, the union is calling on the trust to compensate them for earlier unrewarded work.

The maternity support workers at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby are due to begin a seven-day walkout at 7am on Tuesday (27 August).

UNISON believes senior figures at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust hold the key to resolving the dispute.

The trust’s non-executive directors, who are appointed to the trust’s board to bring independence and impartiality, must challenge the executive on its current position, adds the union.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional organiser Ashley Harper said: “Staff have made clear this dispute isn’t going away.

“They’ve been instructed for years to carry out duties above their banding without being paid for it. Now, they rightly want to be compensated for that.

“Nobody wants to go on strike. The staff want to be doing the jobs they’re passionate about, helping bring babies into the world and to give them the best possible start in life.

“The non-executive directors of the trust need to challenge other senior figures at the organisation so an acceptable offer of back pay is made to staff.”
