A number of UNISON branches across the Yorkshire and Humberside region marked International Workers’ Memorial Day by taking part in events organised to remember those who have lost their lives due to work.
The day is a time to remember those who have died either because of a workplace accident, ill health or diseases as a result of work.
UNISON Barnsley attended an event organised by the TUC in the town centre, with a member of the branch laying a wreath in UNISON colours.

Also in South Yorkshire, UNISON City of Sheffield branch had a strong presence at the event held outside the Town Hall. Chris Hockney from the branch’s Retired Members section laid the UNISON wreath, and a minute’s silence was held after a number of powerful speeches.

UNISON Rotherham health branch also laid wreaths at a memorial, as did UNISON University of Leeds branch, at the memorial plaque outside Leeds Art Gallery.

UNISON Kirklees held a memorial service, which included a minute’s silence followed by a speech by branch secretary Mick Donoghue, who also laid a wreath on behalf of the 9,000 members of the branch.
