Any move to improve pension equality will be a good thing, says UNISON

Commenting on the government’s launch of a new pensions commission today (Monday) to look into measures to provide a more secure retirement, UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards said:

“Every worker needs a pension they can rely upon in their old age. No one should be plunged into poverty when they retire.

“Any initiative that enhances current provision would be a good thing, especially moves to improve equality between men and women.

“With more pensioners falling into poverty as time goes by, it’s vital the commission works quickly.

“Building on the success of auto-enrolment will help. But it’s disappointing that employer contributions won’t increase over the next few years. Low rates are a significant issue.”
