After the recent cancellation of Wakefield’s annual Pride event, a new community LGBT+ event has been launched in the city, which is being backed by UNISON Wakefield.
‘Wakefield Community Pride 2025’ has been organised by LonGBoaT Wakefield – the city’s grassroots LGBT+ arts and community charity. It’ll take place on Sunday 10 August.
UNISON Wakefield local government branch is one of a number of organisations coming together, alongside local activists, artists and community groups, to ensure a pride event happens in the city this year.
The Community Pride event will feature live music, spoken word performances, creative workshops, community stalls, LGBT+ artists and much more, says UNISON. It has been designed to honour the history of the LGBT+ movement, and continue the fight for justice.
UNISON Wakefield branch secretary Sam Greenwood said: “UNISON is proud to support Wakefield Community Pride.
“Trade union values are LGBT+ rights: solidarity, equality and standing together against discrimination.
“This event is a powerful expression of that.”
LonGBoaT Wakefield chair of trustees David Swyer said: “Pride hasn’t been cancelled – it’s been reclaimed.
“This is a grassroots event built by and for the community.
“With the solidarity of local trade unions like UNISON, we’re making space for everyone to be seen, supported and celebrated.”
