A group of band 2 theatres staff in Leeds met with the chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to call on him to pay them fairly for the work they do.

Staff gather before marching through the hospital grounds to the meeting.
Staff are currently employed on band 2 of the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale, which covers ‘personal tasks’ such as feeding and bathing patients. However, theatres staff are required to undertake clinical duties which falls under band 3.
UNISON is working nationally for all band 2 staff with increased responsibilities to be paid at the correct rate for the work they are doing, as part of the union’s Pay Fair for Patient Care campaign. The campaign also aims to ensure that staff to be compensated for band 3 work already carried out.

Loud and clear messaging en route to the meeting!
Other band 2 staff employed by Leeds Teaching Hospitals have already been rebanded, says UNISON. Theatres staff are asking for parity with their colleagues.
During the meeting at the trust headquarters at St James’s Hospital, speakers put forward examples of the work they do to the chief executive, and called on him to address the issue. He failed to make any commitment to staff to do so.

But spirit among theatres staff remains strong, and they are determined to fight for what they deserve.
