UNISON to co-host ‘challenging division’ event in Kirklees

An event to counter division and hatred in communities for people across Kirklees and beyond is to be hosted by the University of Huddersfield’s UNISON branch.

UNISON is working with Holocaust Centre North, an organisation based at the university promoting education about the Holocaust and its aftermath, to raise awareness of human rights, freedom and equality.

More In Common: Challenging Division, which takes place next month, will give visitorsthe opportunity to explore an exhibition called Through Our Eyes. This tells the stories of 16 survivors of Nazi persecution, who later made new lives in the north of England.

It will also include a screening of the award-winning documentary For Sama, about a young woman in the Syrian conflict. The film will help to highlight the human stories behind the headlines and tackle the dehumanisation of asylum seekers and immigrants.

The union has invited local political figures, including West Yorkshire inclusivity champion Fatima Khan-Shah, to speak during the evening.

The event is part of UNISON’s efforts to combat divisive messages about minority groups across the UK and promote unity between communities.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside area organiser Andy Watkins said: “This event should be a fantastic opportunity for people in Huddersfield, across Kirklees and even further to celebrate our diverse communities.

“It’s about showing how much everyone actually has in common, as well as challenging some of the dangerous narratives being put out by some political figures.

“The evening will also be an opportunity to highlight the fantastic work of Holocaust Centre North on these issues.

“The hope is to hold further events on such an important issue.”
