Women’s Leadership Programme launches with first weekend residential

The inaugural UNISON Women’s Leadership Programme got underway with its first residential in Leeds over the weekend, following an online induction.

Women members from across the region keen to improve skills such as mentoring, activism and networking – alongside leadership skills – attended workshops at UNISON’s regional centre, as well as an evening dinner.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional secretary Karen Loughlin was also at the residential, as was the prospective Labour parliamentary candidate for Huddersfield, Harpreet Uppal.

The weekend was the first of three residentials being held over the next 12 months for those registered on the leadership course, as well as two online sessions in July and January.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside head of education Leonie Sharp said: “After a lot of hard work to get the women’s leadership course off the ground, it’s been brilliant to see so many women members keen to push themselves and further develop their skills.

“Around three-quarters of UNISON members are women, so it’s vital we have women in leadership roles to reflect that. Hopefully this course will give these women the skills and confidence to take on those roles.

“I’m excited to see their progress over the next few months!”
