UNISON to lobby Kirklees Council over proposed closure of key services

Workers from Kirklees Council will lobby their employer ahead of this afternoon’s cabinet meeting against potential closures of care homes and leisure centres, says UNISON today (Tuesday).

Workers represented by UNISON will be gathering outside Huddersfield Town Hall at 2.30pm, ahead of the cabinet meeting at 3pm.

The council is planning to cut 250 jobs by next March in its attempt to address its £20 million financial gap.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional organiser Robin Symonds said: “If these potential cuts go ahead, it will undoubtedly have a detrimental impact on the well-being of Kirklees residents.

“The council budget cuts have been relentless and have resulted in a severe shortage of essential services.

“Kirklees Council must find a way to address the shortfall without cutting key services and putting the residents’ welfare at risk.

“Vital services like these shouldn’t be cut, and the people of Kirklees shouldn’t have to suffer because of the government’s inadequate council funding.”
