Weekend of strikes on hold as Rotherham gravediggers consider pay offer, says UNISON

Three days of industrial action by cemetery maintenance staff in Rotherham, from this Friday to Sunday (20, 21 and 22 October), have been put on hold, says UNISON today (Thursday).

The staff are employed by private contractor Glendale Grounds Maintenance, which delivers the crematoria service for Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC).

UNISON says the workers have lost out significantly financially since being transferred out of direct council employment more than a decade ago.

Now a new offer has been put forward by Glendale – and the union has agreed to stand down the three days of industrial action planned for this weekend to consult the employees.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional organiser Dan Wood said: “Staff have fought long and hard to see their pay improve.

“It’s right they take time to consider the latest offer from their employer.

This shows the importance of standing up for better pay. However, if workers decide to reject the offer, UNISON will continue to support them in negotiations.”
