Turbulence forecast for Humberside Airport as staff vote to strike

Workers at Humberside Airport have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, UNISON says today (Wednesday).

Security staff, firefighters, refuellers, cleaners and travel shop staff will all walk out in the dispute over pay.

Workers rejected an offer from the employer last month as it would have still left them paid significantly lower than their counterparts at other airports, UNISON says.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional organiser Michael Parkinson said: “Staff have made it clear they’re not willing to accept being paid lower than people doing the same job in airports like Manchester and Leeds Bradford.

“The employer should be looking to invest in staff, and the airport as a whole, especially after the closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

“Humberside Airport has a great opportunity to develop business, but it needs to invest in staff to do that.”

Dates for strike action are yet to be announced.
