UNISON STATEMENT: Sheffield Steelers v Nottingham Panthers

Everyone at UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events of the ice hockey match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena, on Saturday 28 October.

During the second period of the match, Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson was seriously injured. Around 8,000 fans were at the match, and were asked to leave due to the severity of the injury.

Tragically, the 29-year-old American later died as a result of the injury.

UNISON has a close relationship with Sheffield Steelers, with UNISON Sheffield Teaching Hospital branch sponsoring a number of fixtures, including Saturday’s.

UNISON Sheffield Teaching Hospital branch secretary John Campbell said: “This is an incredibly shocking, upsetting and traumatic incident.

“The thoughts of the branch, and everyone at UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside, are with Adam’s family, friends and teammates during this incredibly sad and difficult time.

“I’d also like to send best wishes to Sheffield Steelers, who are also trying to process this shocking event.”

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional secretary Karen Loughlin said: “This is an incredibly tragic situation, and I cannot begin to imagine what Adam’s family, friends and teammates are going through right now. The condolences of everyone at UNISON are with them.

“My thoughts are also with the thousands of fans who witnessed such a horrible and distressing incident. Please take care of yourselves, and each other – and reach out for support if you’re struggling as a result of what happened on Saturday night.”
