UNISON’s Black History Month Awards event to return for second year

After the success of the inaugural Black History Month Awards event in Sheffield last year, UNISON can confirm the event will be held for a second time later this year.

UNISON Sheffield Teaching Hospital hosted the 2023 event, which featured poets, dancers and musicians, as well as a dinner for guests – and was attended by local political and civil dignitaries. Dozens of UNISON activists were recognised for the work they do to promote, encourage and support diversity and inclusion.

This year, the event is being hosted in Leeds by UNISON Northern Health and Community. Final details of the venue and date will be released in the coming weeks.

UNISON Northern Health and Community branch secretary Dave Syms said: “I’m delighted the branch is in a position to carry on the great work started last year by UNISON Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and its branch secretary John Campbell.

“Diversity and inclusion are a big part of trade unionism and events such as the Black History Month Awards are a perfect demonstration of that.

“Hopefully this year’s event will be just as successful as last year’s, and we’ll be able to celebrate the great work done by UNISON activists.”

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional secretary Karen Loughlin said: “Events like the Black History Month Awards are exactly what UNISON is all about – championing inclusivity and diversity, and those who strive to achieve it.

“It was fantastic that the region was about to support UNISON Sheffield Teaching Hospitals with the event last year, and I’m looking forward to working with UNISON Northern Health and Community to put on another event to remember!”
