Living Wage Foundation accreditation for West Yorkshire Combined Authority welcome news, says UNISON

Commenting on the news that the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) has been accredited as a member of the Living Wage Foundation, UNISON West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Transport branch secretary Pam Sian said:

“This is really encouraging news. It will give a boost to the incomes of low-paid employees, help the authority keep hold of experienced workers and assist with the recruitment of new staff.

“Inflation might have fallen, but the cost-of-living crisis is still having a huge impact on thousands of people. That’s why this move to ensure authority staff and contractors are paid a wage they can actually live on is such a positive step.”

The Living Wage Foundation accreditation means WYCA has committed to paying its entire workforce at least the real living wage of £12 per hour. The authority has also pledged to ensure any people working for its contractors also get that as a minimum hourly rate.

It follows the WYCA signing of UNISON’s anti-racism charter last year, which the union sees as another commitment to improve the working environment for authority employees.
